چکیده

Private forests provide a range of ecosystem services for society including provisioning, regulating, cultural, and supporting services. Sustaining the supply of such services depends on the interest of nonindustrial private forest (NIPF) landowners in managing their forests for such services. Assessing factors that influence NIPF landowner intentions would be useful in identifying potential suppliers of ecosystem services and in designing and implementing outreach and education programs to elevate the interests of less interested landowners. Using data collected from a mail survey of NIPF landowners on the Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee, this study examined how landowner interest in supplying ecosystem services was influenced by socio-demographic characteristics, economic and market factors, land management objectives, and ownership motivations. To that end, a multivariate logistic regression model was employed to analyze the supply of three types of ecosystem services: carbon storage (regulating service), water quality (provisioning service), and aesthetics (cultural service). Results revealed that landowner interest in managing forests for ecosystem services were significantly related to socio-demographic factors, management and ownership characteristics, and availability of financial incentives. These findings will improve the understanding of the market segment of landowners as related to ecosystem OPEN ACCESS Forests 2015, 6 3986 services. The findings may facilitate the development of market protocols and outreach programs that promote payments for ecosystem services in Tennessee and elsewhere.

Forest Fuel Reduction and Biomass Supply: Perspectives from Southern Private Landowners

Removing excess biomass from fire-hazardous forests can serve dual purposes: enhancing the health and sustainability of forest ecosystems and supplying feedstock for energy production. Considerable efforts have been made to estimate the quantity of this biomass available on the ground, yet availability does not necessarily translate into actual supply. This seems especially evident for nonindus...

Social availability of residual woody biomass from nonindustrial private woodland owners in Minnesota and Wisconsin

An important and potentially underused source of biomass that could be utilized in energy production is from nonindustrial private woodlands. We employ the Theory of Planned Behavior to estimate the social availability of woody biomass as a function of landowner behavior intent, landowner characteristics, forest land characteristics, and biomass price on stated willingness to harvest biomass in...

Nonindustrial Private Forest Landowners and the Southern Pine Beetle : Factors Affecting Monitoring , Preventing , and con troll in ^ ^ Infestations

The southern pine beetle (SPB; Dendrodonus frontalis Zimmermann) has been a major source of timber and income loss to nonindustrial private forest landowners in the southern region of United States. Efforts to promote forest health through prevention and control must identify new ways to reach the sociologically diverse and spatially dispersed nonindustrial privote landowners in this region. Effects of Length of Ownership on Forestland Management and Uses on the Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee

The Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee has been the focus of a number of debates recently regarding the management of the region’s natural resources. The main reasons include a significant divesture of land holdings by forest industry, a renewed interest in retirementand second-home developments, and increased attention on the unique natural characteristics of the region. Using a 2005 survey data,...

Modeling NIPF Landowner Behavior: Developing “A Willingness to Sell Timber” in the Future Model

The Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee currently is experiencing wide-spread forest parcelization and changes in species composition as a result of changes in land use and ownership. These changes can be attributed partially to industrial forest land divestiture and the lingering effects of the 1998 – 2002 Southern Pine Beetle (SPB) epidemic. A random sample of 1600 NIPF landowners owning 40 or mo...
